Avant Garden – Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Presents “Avant Garden” Exhibition and Sale

S/ART/q, a circle of artists working to enhance the arts culture in Sarasota, will curate an exhibition of their artwork entitled Avant Garden in the Museum of Botany and the Arts at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens from January 12 through February 20, 2012. Thirteen artists have been granted access to the Gardens to observe and study the botanical collections, and to gather knowledge and inspiration from their experiences to make original works of art. Through this collaboration with s/ART/q, art and science will be seen in tandem as expressions of human creativity and the desire to understand and interpret the world around us.

Formed in late 2008, the s/ART/q artists are: Joseph Arnegger, Ariana Franco, Brian Haverlock, Tim Jaeger, Amy W. Miller, Daniel Miller, Jen Nugent, Daniel Perales, Jeff Schwartz, Nathan Skiles, Sabrina Small, Tom Stephens and Steve Strenk. These artists will display their interpretations of the Gardens in a fresh and interesting way as well as revealing to the public how artists function in society. The exhibit will bring awareness to rarely seen aspects of the Gardens and its collections.

Entry to the exhibition is included in the price of admission to the Gardens. Public programming will be offered with the exhibition in the form of an opening reception, tours, lectures, and interpretive elements such as labels and a film featuring interviews with the artists. For more information, visit www.selby.org/events/sartq-exhibition. The Museum of Botany and the Arts is open 10 am – 4:30 pm daily.

THIRTEEN will be S/ART/Q’s first exhibition since March 2010 to showcase the group, including its four new artists: Ariana Franco, Amy W. Miller, Jen Nugent and Steve Strenk. With artists working in a wide range of media, from sculpture to painting, installation to kinetic art, the exhibition will provide a dynamic survey of thirteen professional artists living and working in Sarasota, Florida.

When asked what is so unique about S/ART/Q exhibiting for the second time at G.WIZ Science Museum, artist Steve Strenk replied, “This exhibition is designed to encompass new work, new artists and a new year. Furthermore, it’s the group, the deadlines, and the artistic community that are the criteria for exciting and innovative art. S/ART/Q is a circle of artists who redefines the term new. SARTQ Voyeur Exhibition

S/ART/Q pops-up a new “Invitational” gallery show, Oct. 22-23 in downtown Sarasota

ART EXHIBIT

We’ve become known for our one-off, one-of-a-kind art events, like September’s “Print Party.” Now, in partnership with the Ringling College of Art + Design, we will hold our first “Invitational” show Oct. 22-23 in downtown Sarasota. Each of the ten S/ART/Q artists has invited one artist from the local community to show his or her work with our support during a special two-day engagement at 1549 State St. (formerly furniture store dkVogue and also the home of our Inaugural Exhibition last fall). The opening reception will be from 5 to 10 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 22 with gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 23. The event is free and open to the public.

“This exhibition is inspired by a limitless vision of what our local arts picture can look like,” explains S/ART/Q president and co-founder Tim Jaeger. “The Invitational brings established reputations and emerging talents together with the goal of exposing the public to a vast array of contemporary art of the highest caliber.”

Our core members selected the guest-artists based upon artistic merit and peer recommendation. Each Invitational artist has distinguished themselves in their particular style, genre or medium, reflecting a multiplicity of direction in the local art scene. “The Invitational is another community outreach project for us,” says S/ART/Q secretary and treasurer Jeff Schwartz. “As part of our core mission of involving the community, we want to recognize other artists we feel are contributing significantly to contemporary art in Sarasota.”

The invited artists reflect a diversity of experience, with both students and professional career artists showing a range of work including installation, performance, painting, mixed media and drawing. The 2010 S/ART/Q Invitational artists (in alphabetical order) are: Kim Anderson, Aaron Board, Ariana Franco, Caui Lofgren, Paul Matkowsky, John Mack, Vanessa Mayoraz, Jenn Nugent, Michael Panarella, Andrew Scott Ross, Kim Russo and Steven Strenk.

After the success of the first s/ART/q fundraising event in August, a T-Shirt Screenprinting Party, and a live collaborative painting demo at the SRQ Hotlist Party, the fourteen artists are joining forces once again, this time turning the empty store front at 1549 State St. (formerly dkVogue), into a gallery for the weekend of Nov. 6. “We see ourselves as ambassadors of the arts community that is Sarasota and downtown is the heart of that,” explains founding member Joseph Arnegger.

The artists will show contemporary art of the highest caliber in many different disciplines including painting, photography, sculpture and multimedia work. After a private, invite-only vernissage on Thursday night, s/ART/q will open the doors to the public once again for a Friday night reception. On Saturday, the pop-up gallery will be open for farmers market hours incorporating several outreach programs into the day (a full schedule will be online soon).

“s/ART/q looks forward to providing the kind of exhibition that this community has been looking foward to for a long time now” says president and co-founder Tim Jaeger. “We are excited to give Sarasota not just another art show, but a multi-tiered exhibition with artist talks, student tours, a director’s walk-through, and much more.
